Now We Are 3
It has been fun getting to know Dalton. We are changing his name to Mr. Clean as he does laundry every other day! His mother even offered to buy us laundry soap as she must know her son well. He has done well defensively, but he has not had much in the way of hitting the last several games. He is so serious! When he gets up to bat, he holds his bat straight up and looks to the sky. Like a prayer. His folks have a travel trailer and are here in PA for a while. He often goes out to their place for dinner. They even brought his German Shepard that they are training to be a service dog.
Sunday night, the other 2 guys arrived and the dynamic has changed. Isaac is out there - super friendly and funny. He looks like a tall Bradley Cooper. He is an outfielder/first baseman. He has hit 2 home runs in 3 games so far. Unfortunately, he struck out the last bat of the game last night with a chance to tie the score. He has finished his 2nd year at Spokane Falls CC and is going to LC State next year in business(?). I think he is majoring in baseball as they all do. He's from Cle Elum.
Rhys is from West Seattle, also from Spokane Falls CC and is a left handed pitcher. He pitched 6 2/3 innings last night, holding them to only 1 run. I guess they pulled him because of pitch count, but the reliever lost the game. He is about 6' (says he is 6'2") and ordinary looking. Much quieter than Isaac. He was given size 42 pants (he can't be more than a 32). Luckily before he pitched last night, they found pants that fit. He is going to Central Washington in the fall.
The team was doing really well with 5 straight wins, but have lost the last 4. Hope they survive the Victoria Harbor Cats this weekend. They have a day off tomorrow and are going to Rhys's house and taking in the Mariners vs Red Sox game.
As per usual, I hardly see these guys during the week as they come in late and get up late. Isaac wanted to do the "whole 30" diet, mostly meat and vegetables. This degenerated into meat and eggs by the end of the evening. They aren't too big on sweets, so I won't be baking many cookies for this crew. They are all unfailingly polite. Dalton's favorite expletive is "holy cow".
Dutton, my catcher from last year was here with the Cowlitz Black Bears for a 3 day stand. He was starting catcher 2 of the 3 games and hit a home run and a double tonight. He is still the sweetest thing. Gave me a big hug and wants to stay in touch. This year he does not have to take summer classes as he has brought up his GPA. I told him if he keeps up this hitting streak, he will be back in PA for the All Star Game!
I texted Marten and he is working this summer but going to play professional ball in Australia this fall. Woo Hoo! Now that sounds like fun.
This has not been baseball weather - too cold and windy. Hope that next week when they start a long home stand, it will be warmer. Kind of glad they are not playing in town for a few days as I am getting a little tired of baseball. I can usually make it through the 7th inning stretch but have yet to sit through a whole game. The crowds have been a little sparse, but I think it is because school is still in session and it is just too damn cold.
