Extra Innings

So, Rhyse's elbow does not need surgery, but he has to rest it for 3-6 weeks, so his season is done.  He went home Tuesday after seeing the orthopedic surgeon.  It was bitter sweet to see him leave.  I actually got a one armed hug!  Hope to see him play in the spring for Central. Then, Dalton went on the Bellingham road trip.  He did well batting in the first game, but then they asked him to relief pitch in the second game. Uh oh!  He had pitched in high school, but partially tore his UCL, so switched to outfield   Of course, he tore it again.  I got him in to see the orthopedic surgeon who suggested an MRI.  He will get that done at home in Wenatchee and start rehab prior to going to Virginia to school in mid-August.  Hope this is not a career ending injury.  Dalton seems to think he will still be able to bat and play outfield.  Hope so.  He needs this scholarship.  This is a huge opportunity for him.  Int...

The Days Dwindle Down to Precious Few.

The game last Thursday night was against a non-league team that has only won one game.  By the bottom of the 4th, we were looking flat and losing.  Rhyse had pitched a couple of innings the night before, so we didn't expect him to pitch.  We left.  And as we were headed to our car, we heard "Now pitching for the Lefties, Rhyse Frey".  Damn!  Anyway, he got the save and the boys came back in spades to win.  Then they went on the road and lost 3 in a row.  Rhyse didn't even go on this road trip. Then came the All Star Game.  Dalton went 0 for 2 and was hit by a pitch.  Nothing broken, but he was unable to hold his bat the rest of the game.  Dutton our catcher from last year was in the game, saw us and we chatted for a bit.  Unfortunately, I got called in for an emergency before the end of the game, so we couldn't visit afterwards.  He is such a sweetheart.  We will definitely watch him play for U of Portland next spring...

All Stars

4 of our guys got picked for the All Star team!  Quite a difference from last year when we had only one pitcher  Of course, Dalton was selected and he got the WCL Player of the Week!  He is on fire!  I think every young single girl in town is after him.  The other evening he left at 4PM to go "berry picking" with a friend.  No dude would ever go berry picking, so I am pretty sure it was with a girl.  He got home long after Dean and I were in bed and no berries!  Last night he buzzed out right after dinner, again, in late.  I'm glad he is having fun. Rhyse has really come into his own without Isaac. He has a wicked sense of humor.  Earlier in the season, Dean asked him what pitch he would use in certain situations (0-2, 3-2).  The answer was always "curve ball".  He last pitched on July 4, then again on the 10th.  He came in as short relief in the 8th, walked a bunch of guys, but only held them to one run.  In th...

Moving On

Isaac left on the 5th.  One of the other kids also left and was driving home to Utah, so he gave Isaac a ride to Cle Elum.  It's always sad to see them go.  I know he will do well with whatever he decides.  He told me he wants 5 kids and to find a woman who will put up with him.  With his looks and personality, it shouldn't be too hard.  The game on the 4th was amazing.  Dalton hit a home run over the center field fence that was so high it almost knocked out the light stanchions.  Rhyse came in as the closer and put in an Edwin Diaz performance.  Sadly, we were down by one and they couldn't generate another run in the bottom of the 9th.  They had a day off on Thursday and last night won (another home run by Dalton!).  Yesterday we got a package of Oregon treats from Dutton's parents (our guy from last year), thanking us for taking such good care of their big baby boy and for our continued support.  My heart is full.  Rh...

Deja vu all over again

Well, it's happened.  Isaac is leaving because he is not getting enough playing time.  Same thing happened with the team last year and it makes me so sad.  I want this team to succeed as this town needs them.  I want these boys to succeed as I really like them  It seems so random - Isaac is a good player, hard worker and very collegial.  Why is he one of the ones that is not playing?  I know I don't see what happens at practice, etc., but as I told Matt (the owner) last year:  these guys give up their summers to play for him when they could be with their families, working a summer job or going on vacation.  It is not fair - but then life is not fair.  Still, it's got to hurt. Rhyse is staying as they need pitchers.  Dalton will leave at the end of July since he needs to be in Virginia in mid-August.  They play the Wenatchee team July 31-August 2, in Wenatchee, so he will just go home and stay there.  He is getting playi...
