Fantasy Futures The guys are in to fantasy leagues, so I came up with a fantasy future for each one Jack - Catcher for the Yankees, marries a movie star Javy - plays 2nd base for the Mariners, becomes the president of the players association Steven - closer for the Phillies. His post game interviews are so entertaining that he becomes a color commentator. Sweetly, Jack asked me what my fantasy retirement is. Steven and his fans

S'Mores We had another fire in the solo stove last night and of course that means s'mores. They are all perfecting their marshmallow roasting skills. It amazes me that these high tech kids really enjoy sitting around the fire, shooting the breeze. Definitely fun. The big obsession is now hair cuts. Javy's dad already has him going to a barber on Saturday as soon as he gets home. Jack is going to keep letting his hair grow. And Steven's is getting pretty wild. His mom will definitely make him get it cut before he starts school. There is always end of the season drama, brought on by the coach/owner. He has a tendency to treat the kids without respect. Of course there are 2 sides to each story, but this is not new. Of all people, Javy, who is so quiet, got into it with the coach this past week and he was made to sit the bench for 2 games. Since he is the most consistent player, it seems a little weird. Oh well, only 3 ...

The End is Near Only 5 more games. Steven pitched last night and lost his focus in the 5th inning. He expected to pitch 40 innings this summer and has pitched 57. That's a lot for an 18 year old arm. He is philosophical about it though. This guy will go far. He was telling me today that his mom was thinking of retiring this year and he told her it wasn't good idea since he (the youngest) was leaving home. Actually good advice. Sat around with the guys last night and the topics ranged from the Olympics, sport with the best athletes (basketball), naming a relative's dog, and other sports they are not able to play because of the commitment to baseball. Only Jack has ever skied and quit a few years ago to focus on baseball and avoid other injuries. Javy was discouraged from playing football in HS since he was on a baseball scholarship even then. A very different life and an all consuming one. The road trip was not good, lost all 3 games ...

Long Road Trip The guys have been gone since Tuesday and it has been quiet around here. They are back tonight, day off tomorrow, then to Wenatchee for 3 games. Then a 6 game home stand and the season is over. As always it seems to go so fast. I think all 3 will be with us the entire season - a first! Sunday we did pizza with Jack's parents here. Again it was a ton of fun. The boys are developing some real skills and it is great to have everyone together. Monday was a day off, so I took them out to dinner at a local golf course restaurant, one of the few places open on Mondays in this not quite post pandemic world. I asked each of them why they chose the position they play and their answers were so indicative of their personalities: Steven-pitcher - In my sophomore year of high school, I realized I really didn't like batting, but was a pretty good thrower. (of course, pitchers are quirky) Jack - catcher - In little league, I was...
