The End Is Near

Once again, I have been too long between posts.  First was the arrival of Diego, a catcher from Mill Creek who goes to school in Southern California.  Goofy kid, super friendly.  He was so happy to be on the Lefties as he was in a lower league where they had to drive to their games.  He was actually happy for the bus ride to Bellingham and Kelowna.  He stayed for 2 weeks, then left to go home.
Nick left shortly after my last post.  His great aunt and uncle passed away, but I suspect it was homesickness and lack of playing time.  He and Diego were replaced by Brandon and Brad, teammates from Pacific University.  Brad is a second baseman and Brandon a catcher.  Brad can’t be taller than 5’6” and must have a 28” waist.  He has a mop of dark curly hair and is constantly buzzing.  He even eats standing up.  Today he Drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.  The team was so excited, they threw him up in the air.  He was even more buzzy than usual tonight.
Brandon is from Puyallup, an adopted kid from Korea.  His parents are from NJ.  Both of these kids are really chatty and fun.  Brandon got a hit in today’s game too.  He was on the Redmond Dudes where Rhys from last year was playing.  As catcher, he asked Rhys what he was planning to throw.  “Curve ball”.. Of course!  That’s his only pitch.  Brandon and I had a good laugh about that.
Then of course, there is Jonny.  He was a pinch hitter last week which caused the announcer to laugh. He did well enough that they put him in as the DH on Thursday, right field Friday and Saturday and he was the closer today. No more complaints about not getting much playing time.
Friday’s game was another nail biter, tied going in to the bottom of the ninth.  Diego, Brad and Jonny all got on base (Jonny with a perfectly executed bunt).  The bases were loaded with Woodhaven Lane boys.  The next batter up rapped a ball into the outfield to win the game.
Follow up on my previous boys -
I had breakfast with Dutton in Portland last weekend.  He thinks he is going to finish college in 4 years!  He was contacted by a scout from the Phillies about getting picked up this summer in the 8th round, but injured his arm partway through the season, so no go.  He is still holding on to the dream.
Dalton is not going back to Virginia Tech and not playing in Cape Cod.  He is home in Wenatchee playing for the Apple Sox (and doing quite well) and playing at Lewis Clark State next year, majoring in biology.
Isaac has quit LC State (“it was a shitshow”). And starting at Oklahoma Wesleyan in the fall.
Rhys played for the Redmond Dudes for part of the season but his arm needs a rest. Apparently he had a good year at Central Washington.
Nick Israel was with the Yakima Pippins for part of the season, but is no longer on their roster.
Oh, and Jonny will probably need to take more classes after his senior year to qualify for PT school, “unless I get picked up”.  Sweet boys.  They love this game so much.
