Season Four

After a year off for the pandemic, we are back at being a Lefties host family.  We were guaranteed that they were all vaccinated and so are we, so I guess it is pretty safe.  This year we have 3 guys from soCal.  Steve is a relief pitcher who is going to start Cal Poly in the fall.  Jack is a catcher who is starting at UCLA in the fall and Javy is an infielder going into his junior year at St Marys.  The 2 young guys are 6'5" and 6'4" so they will be picking my cherries this year.  Jack was looking in one of the kitchen cabinets and I had to tell him that anything we would use regularly would be on the first 2 shelves, not the top one.  They are super nice but so young.  Javy is a little more seasoned.  We have dinner for them when they get home from their game.  Often, we are in bed before the game is over, so I leave them a note.  The other night, Dean made teriyaki chicken bowls. I left a note that the rice was in the rice cooker, the chicken on a platter on the counter, veggies in a sauce pan on the stove and sauces in bottles on the counter.  When I got up the next morning, the poor veggies were still in the sauce pan.  I did make them into a nice broccoli cheddar soup but know enough to not serve it to them.  We usually have them make their own breakfast, but Dean said it was a regular shit show, so he has been supervising.  Today at their request, I bought Frosted Flakes and Honey Nut Cheerios.  Should make for an easier breakfast.  The season started Tuesday and I was back to work. Javy got into town at 2:30, suited up and played that night.  I went to bed before they got home and they get up long after I have left for work.  I didn't even meet Javy until Thursday!  

After this week, I will be off, so should have some time to get to know them better.  So glad to have baseball back.

Season Six

  And so it begins again.  Roxi who used to manage the housing for the team, sold their home in PA, bought an RV and hit the road.  The poor new girl managing the housing was overwhelmed and didn't let us know until the last second who was coming and from where.  We have 3 guys, all from Cal State San Bernardino.  Andreas is a pitcher (really good), Derek is an outfielder and initially the lead off batter, and Riley plays shortstop or 3rd base and initially batted clean up.  They are really nice guys, all over 21.  They don't need a mom like last year's boys did so it has been a little hard to warm up to them.  They like to go fishing in their off time and probably go to the local bars. They don't eat like last year's group. Back to 3

The dudes came home after a disappointing road trip where they went 1 and 8.  They pulled in at 5:10  this morning just as Watson and I were headed out for our walk,  Dutton has his car, so I guess they drove all night.  They looked a little ragged, and yes, there are now 3.  The third guy is another pitcher and another Nick.  They promptly went to bed, but Dean says they were up and out to the lake by 1.  They did not come home for dinner as I guess there is a great party at the lake.  Apparently, it includes some of the local girls which was enough stimulus to get these guys up and at "em.  It's 10:20 and they are still not home, Oh to be young!!!!

 Well Qualified Trainer I have been the unofficial/official trainer again as the trainer they hired quit.  Tonight, on the 2nd pitch, our catcher caught one in the scrotum.  Luckily he was wearing a cup.  It took him a while to be able to stand and walk, and I am told it looked quite comical with me at 4'11"  escorting off a 6'4" baseball player off the field.  After some ice and ibuprofen, I examined him and all was intact.  Poor guy.  Like Stephen says, everyone in the stands was thinking about his junk.  At least this was an injury I am imminently qualified to evaluate and treat.  Parents are in town and since the pandemic, very few restaurants are open on Mondays which is their day off.  We will host the parents for stuffed burgers.  Today at the ball field, we are having a pot luck for the host families, players and their families.  I started making chocolate chip cookies at 0700.  I made 3 batches and luckily we...
