California Love Fest

In April we drove to California to watch our boys of last summer play their college ball.  Luckily, they all had games in the Bay Area the same weekend and my work schedule coincided with the games.

First up was St Mary's in Moranga to watch Javy play.  It is a beautiful campus with a very small field.  Javy's mom says they promised a new stadium 3 years ago when he first started.  Still waiting.  It was free hat day, so we now both have St Mary's ballcaps.  Javy's entire extended family comes up from SoCal - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins.  They accepted us as one of their own.  We all went out for beer and pizza afterwards.  Sadly, Javy wasn't playing 2nd base that day, but he did get in as DH and it was a beautiful day to watch baseball.

Second up was Jack playing for UCLA at Cal Berkley.  The biggest news is that he has gotten his hair cut!  Those gorgeous flowing locks! The stadium is classic and it was a full crowd of mostly young little league players.  As a freshman, Jack is pretty much relegated to warming up the pitchers.  But we did get to see him in uniform on the field.

Third was watching Stephen pitch for Cal Poly at Santa Clara.  His mom and aunt met us for an early dinner and brought a huge basket of baseball themed things for our granddaughter - a baseball rattle, "The Berenstein Bears Play Baseball", "Curious George Goes to the Baseball Park" and "Goodnight Baseball".  There were also mugs for Dean and me "Promoted to Grandpa 2022" and "Promoted to Grandma 2022".  We feel so loved.  The best part was that Steven got to pitch that night after a 2 week benching (for reasons still unknown).  He did very well in the inning he pitched.

I continued to follow the boys in their college game box scores.  Javy got back to playing 2nd base.  He is playing for Edmonton this summer and will be in Port Angeles in August.  Jack got to pinch hit and DH some towards the end of the season, especially in a playoff game against OSU where he had 2 hits. They got through the first round of the college world series.  He is playing for Santa Barbara this summer which makes his mom happy that he is closer to home.  Stephen got to pitch a lot more towards the end of his college season and finished up the year in Hawaii.  He is playing for the Wilmer Minnesota Stingers, a town known for their mosquitos this summer.  I can only imagine the complaining!
