And So It Goes
So Golden Tate was a flash in the pan. Played 3 games and no one has seen or heard from him since. He just wasn't that good. The guys thought he was a show boater too.
I took the guys to Hurricane Ridge one day as Andres had never seen snow. He immediately made a snow ball and threw it, but was disappointed he couldn't make a snow angel. Derek promptly put snow down the back of his neck. They did have a party out at Lake Crescent and went to Devil's Punchbowl, a rite of passage in Port Angeles.
Things are quiet here now. Derek asked me if his girlfriend could stay over July 4th as the hotel rooms here were so expensive. I said sure as we have had girlfriends in the past. The other 2 said "Yess!" and we wound up hosting a 3 girlfriends for 10 days! Have to admit, the house smelled better with the girls and they were really nice. Didn't eat much. I took the girls to Hurricane Ridge one day and they got some really good shots of the deer. They must not have deer in SoCal as they were so enamored with them. To us, they are just pests.
Still not interacting a lot with this crew, they are so self sufficient. I am exhausted when they get home and don't want to eat that late, so rarely have time to sit and chat after the games. They sleep late and are rarely up when I leave the house, even on days I am not working.
Derek had strep throat, so I took him to Urgent Care one Saturday, then out to lunch. Had a nice chat and he told me about his summer ball last year in a town of 3000 in Kansas with only a McDonalds and a Walmart. He was in a house without a host family and his roommate left after a week. He had to go to Wichita several times a week to get something to eat other than McDonalds. The man does not cook. It must have been awful when he had to quarantine when he got Covid. I told him, after that, he can do anything.
Follow up on the boys of last summer:
Jack is playing for Santa Barbara and finding a lot to do in his off time.
Javy pulled a hamstring and left Edmonton for the rest of the season so we won't be seeing him in August when they play here
Steven is playing for the Willmar Stingers in Minnesota (home of the mosquitos from friends who have lived in MN). His uniform is yellow on top and bottom, so he looks like a pitching banana. I sent him a txt about it and he said he likes to think that he can rock anything! He went 8 innings one night and even fielded a bunt and covered 1st base! (he never did that here, always cringed when the ball was hit near him). The twitter feed from his team said he was hypnotizing. Just what his ego needs!
The team is just so so. They usually win one game in each 3 game series. Bats are pretty slow. There is a promotion running that if a Lefty hits a home run, "cocoa bombs" are only $5 for the remainder of the inning. Last night Riley hit a home run after we left, so no cocoa bomb for me. It's has become a running joke among the host families. Maybe tonight.
Went to Portland last weekend and met up with Dutton, one of our original Lefties. It was good to see him and he is doing well. Got a degree in marketing from U of Portland and has a real job in finance. Plays rec league baseball, but only catches about half the time. He is enjoying 2nd base!
Nick the First got married this year and posted some wonderful shots of the ceremony on Facebook. He and his wife look so happy.
Headed into the home stretch with this crew. Looks like they will be staying till the very end of the season.
